Chapter 31

I ease my way down to sit on the top step, trying to hear the discussion from below, but it’s impossible.

Cyle sits next to me. “Hey, are you okay?”

A tear of rage slides down my cheek before I respond. “Not really,” I whisper.

“Oh, kiddo. I’m sorry you’re going through this.” Cyle plants a kiss on my temple. “Do you get why I told you to stop the interview?”

I nod. “How can they even think that Jonas or I have anything to do with this?”

“I don’t know, but they need to hurry and eliminate you guys as suspects so that they can find the real killer.”

Before I can respond, I catch a snippet of Jonas’ raised voice. “… need an attorney.”

I stand as quickly as my pregnant body will allow and rush down the steps, probably sounding like a stampeding elephant on my way. Jonas is red-faced and his eyes bulge with anger. He stands next to the door, with his hand on the knob, while the two agents remain seated at the kitchen table.

I walk over and grab his hand. “Are you okay?”

“No, not really. These two,” he pauses and points at the agents, “think that I had something to do with the murdered kids. And to make it worse, they’re once again bringing up the investigation into the women. Of which I’ve been cleared twice now.” I rarely hear Jonas yell, but now he’s completely lost his cool.

“We would like you to leave until we can seek legal counsel,” I say in a surprisingly steady voice that doesn’t give away my anxiety.

To my shock, both agents pack away their notebooks and rise from the table. Jonas mouths the words thank you to me as he opens the door to expedite their departure. Agent Kempton steps out first, but Agent Monroe pauses inside the threshold.

“I’m sure that both of you are aware, but we will be in contact for further questioning. Do not leave this area.”

I want to tell him to go screw himself, but instead, I point to my stomach. “In case you haven’t noticed, sir, I’m very pregnant. We must stay in the area so that I’m close to my doctor when I go into labor.”

He smirks and then walks out the door. Jonas slams it shut behind him.

“What the actual hell?” he shouts as he paces. “I totally get how they’d want to talk to us about the missing kids since we were near two of the dead bodies but bringing up Mallory and the other women is completely uncalled for.” Jonas sinks to the hearth and buries his head in his hands.

I sit next to him and pull him toward me. His body is rigid. I don’t realize he’s crying until I hear him sniffle. I’m completely caught off guard, as I’ve only seen him cry a handful of times and those were usually over happy events, like our wedding.

“Babe, it will be okay,” I say while stroking his hair.

“I want to believe you, but I don’t see how.
